Claimed on waivers from the Montreal Expos, June 21, 2000...the left-hander, who made his major league debut in 2000, embarks on his eighth pro season...Montreal's 30th-round pick in the 1993 June draft, he'd spent his first seven-plus seasons in the Expos organization before the Rockies snagged him...like Adam Melhuse, he made five stops at three levels in two organizations during the 2000 season, including a pair of major league stints...since 1998, he's made 10 stops (five in 2000, three in '99 and two in '98)...in 182 minor league appearances, Moraga (MOOR-ah-gah) has made 110 starts...the Colorado organization used him exclusively as a minor-league starter in 2000, and he fired five complete games in 14 assignments...in fact, Moraga collected five of his 10 career complete games during his short time in the Rockies chain...in 764.1 career minor league innings, he's gone 50-49 with a 3.64 ERA, three saves and two shutouts, and only 2.99 walks per 9 IP (254 BB, 761.1 IP).
2000
SUMMARY
Moraga wore five different uniforms combined for the Expos and Rockies organizations.
- He opened at Double-A Harrisburg, where he went 7-3 with a 3.41 ERA in 12 games (all starts)...over his final three starts, he allowed three earned runs in 23.0 IP (1.17)...after his June 6 start, the Expos brought him to the majors for the first time (jumping Triple-A).
- He made his major league debut June 11 at Toronto...he faced two batters, allowing a hit and walk, and both runners eventually scored...he closed his three-game major league stint with a pair of appearances at Milwaukee, June 12 and 14, during which he allowed five earned runs in 1.2 IP.
- After Colorado claimed him on waivers June 21, he was added to the 40-man roster and assigned to Double-A Carolina.
- Over his first three starts in the Rockies organization, he went 2-1 with a 1.13 ERA (24.0 IP, 15 H, 3 ER, 3 BB, 24 SO)...overall during his time with Carolina, he fanned at least seven in five starts.
- Transferred to Colorado Springs (AAA) Aug. 7, he made five PCL starts to finish the minor league season, going 4-1with two complete games.
- On Sept. 19, the Rockies gave him a late recall after losing Pedro Astacio and Masato Yoshii to injuries...Moraga made one appearance, Sept. 28 vs. Arizona...he allowed four hits, five runs, earned, and one homer in 1.0 inning...he was the last Rockies pitcher to stand on the mound in 2000 at Coors.
1999
David pitched for three teams on three levels in the Montreal
ladder: Jupiter (A), Ottawa (AAA) and Harrisburg (AA), in that
order.
- Combined for the three affiliates, he went 10-8 with a
3.85 ERA (156.2 IP, 67 ER), 49 walks, 101 strikeouts, two
complete games and two shutouts in 28 games/26 starts.
- He spent most of the season at Jupiter in the Florida State
League, where he went 8-6 in the rotation, with a 3.66 ERA
(137.2 IP, 56 ER) and two complete games, both of which were
shutouts.
- Those two shutouts led the FSL.
- He made the unconventional jump from Single-A to
Triple-A, making his debut at that level with Ottawa of the
International League.
- He saw four games/three starts for the Senators, going 1-2
with a 6.19 ERA...after allowing only eight homers in 137.2 IP
with Jupiter, he gave up four round-trippers in 16.0 innings with
Ottawa.
- David went from Triple-A to Double-A to conclude his
season, with one scoreless 3.0-IP appearance with
Harrisburg.
1998
Moraga combined at both Single-A Jupiter and Double-A
Harrisburg to go 6-6 with a 3.81 ERA (85.0 IP, 36 ER).
- He began and made 25 appearances (all in relief) with
Single-A Jupiter...he walked only nine batters in 45.0 IP, or 1.8
per 9 IP.
- Transferred to the Eastern League, he got his first taste of
Double-A with Harrisburg, where he went 1-4 with a 4.95 ERA
and one save in 19 games (four starts).
1997
The left-hander pitched the season at West Palm Beach (A) in
the Florida State League, where he was 1-4 with a 4.91 ERA in
13 games and seven starts...it marked the third straight season
in which Moraga pitched for that club.
1996
He went 7-10 with a 4.58 ERA and one complete game,
pitching the full year with West Palm Beach...he made 20 starts
and tossed one complete game in 29 appearances.
1995
In his first full pro season, David pitched for both West Palm
Beach (A) in the Florida State League, and Albany in the South
Atlantic League.
1994
The Expos' 30th-round pick in the 1993 June draft, Moraga
signed May 25, 1994 and opened his pro career in the Gulf
Coast League (rookie).
