2007

2006
The A's reliever missed half of the season with left shoulder tendinitis, but was very productive when on the mound. Kennedy's 2.31 ERA was the lowest on the A's, and he didn't start a game for the first time in his six-year career. He was on the disabled list from May 21-Aug. 14 and missed 84 games. When he returned, Kennedy didn't allow a run in his first 11 outings, and put together a career-high 16 1/3 straight scoreless innings from May 6-Sept. 12. He didn't allow a homer for his first 37 games and 33 innings, before Mike Napoli homered off him on Sept. 28. He struck out A.J. Pierzynski on Sept. 17 for strikeout No. 500 of his career.
2005
Was acquired from Colorado on July 13 and was placed in the A's bullpen after spending the first half of the season in the Rockies starting rotation...had two wins, two blown saves, a 3.00 ERA (6 er in 18.0 ip) and a .235 (16-for-68) opponents batting average in 11 relief appearances before he replaced the injured Rich Harden in the A's rotation on Aug. 27...finished the season by going 2-5 with a 5.06 ERA (24 er in 42.2 ip) and a .279 (48-for-172) opponents batting in eight starts...combined to go 4-5 with a 4.45 ERA in 19 games (eight starts) with the A's...was 4-8 with a 7.04 ERA in 16 games, all starts, with Colorado, and had an overall record of 8-13 with a 6.01 ERA in 35 games (24 starts) in 2005...his ERA was third highest among Major League pitchers with 150 or more innings pitched, behind Kansas City's Jose Lima (6.99) and Cincinnati's Eric Milton (6.47)...using the 150-inning standard, he had the third highest opponents on-base percentage (.376) and the seventh highest opponents batting average (.308)...had career highs in losses, games, opponents batting average, earned runs (102) and wild pitches (8) and matched his career high in runs allowed (114)...was 6-13 with a 6.42 ERA (96 er in 134.2 ip) and .317 (176-for-555) opponents batting average in 24 ...allowed all 20 of his home runs as a starter...is now 33-50 with a 5.01 ERA (406 er in 730.0 ip) in 123 career starts and 2-1 with a 2.73 ERA (10 er in 33.0 ip) in 21 career relief appearances...his .308 opponents batting average broke down to .265 (35-for-132) against left-handed hitters and .320 (157-for-491) against right-handers...has a .238 (157-for-661) career opponents batting average against lefties, compared to .295 (691-for-2341) against righties...allowed a .359 (61-for-170) opponents average with runners in scoring position, which was third highest in the Majors...opponents were 6-for-15 (.400) with the bases loaded and they now have a .320 (16-for-50) career average with the bases full...allowed a .266 (67-for-252) opponents batting average the first time through the line-up, .307 (62-for-202) the second time and .373 (63-for-169) after that...his career numbers are .260 (284-for-1093), .276 (275-for-998) and .317 (289-for-911) respectively...allowed a .278 (90-for-324) opponents batting average over his first 45 pitches in a game and .341 (102-for-299) after that...the A's went 2-6 in his starting assignments and the Rockies were 6-10 in games in which he started...his teams are 47-76 (.382) in his 123 career starting assignments...tossed seven or more innings in just three of his 24 starts, including one with the A's...allowed three runs or fewer nine times, including five with Oakland...walked two batters or fewer 13 times, including six times with Oakland...as a starter, his teams scored just 14 runs while he was pitching in his 13 losses for run support of 1.81 (69.2 ip)...his teams were shut out in four of his starts...had run support of charged with blown saves on July 21 at Texas and Aug. 21 against Kansas City...made his first start on Aug. 27 at Baltimore and he allowed one run in five innings for the win...ended up going 2-0 with a 2.92 ERA (4 er in 12.1 ip) in seven games, one start, in August...went 0-5 with a 6.16 ERA (21 er in 30.2 ip) in six starts in September...became the first A's pitcher to lose five games in a month since Tom Candiotti had five losses in June 1998...the five-game losing streak was a season high...two of his five losses in September came against Los Angeles, and he is now 0-8 with a 6.56 ERA (34 er in 46.2 ip) in 10 career games (nine starts) against the Angels...won his final start of the season on Oct. 2 at Seattle, allowing three runs in seven innings...was the Opening Day starter for Colorado, the second Opening Day start of his career (also 2003 with Tampa Bay)...had a no-decision in the Rockies' 12-10 win over San Diego on April 4 (5.0 ip, 7 h, 6 r, 6 er, 4 bb, 7 so) and surrendered a career high-tying three home runs...it was the 100th start of his career...missed a turn in the rotation due to a deep bone bruise in his left ankle, suffered during his May 6 start at Florida...was hit in the foot by a line drive off the bat of Juan Encarnacion in the sixth inning and did not return...won two straight starts on May 17 against San Francisco and May 22 at Pittsburgh, when he tossed a season-high 8.1 innings...had a three-game losing streak from May 27 to June 20 and posted an 8.67 ERA (26 er in 27.0 ip) in five games during this streak...went 3-1 with a 7.09 ERA and .359 opponents batting average in seven starts at Coors Field and 1-7 with a 7.01 ERA and .315 opponents batting average in nine starts on the road.
2004
Achieved what no pitcher had done in the history of the Colorado Rockies, qualify for the league ERA title with an earned run average below 4.00...set a franchise record with a 3.66 ERA, 18th lowest in the National League and seventh lowest among NL left-handers...the previous club record was exactly 4.00 by Armando Reynoso set during the 1993 expansion season...set a career high with nine wins, going 9-7 with a 3.66 ERA and one complete game in 27 starts...also set a career standard with 117 strikeouts...opponents batted a collective .265 off him, the second lowest average against in team history (Kevin Ritz, .259 in 1995)...left-handers hit .183 off him, fifth lowest in the NL but second among starters behind only Randy Johnson (.163)...righties hit .290...limited opposing hitters to a .222 average with runners on base and .197 with runners in scoring position, eighth best in the league...compiled one of the finest seasons ever at Coors Field, as he finished the year 6-1 with a 3.59 ERA in 14 starts at home...it ranked as the second lowest ERA by a starting pitcher at that ballpark, trailing only Denny Stark's 3.21 in 2002...went 3-6 with a 3.73 ERA in 13 road assignments...worked at least 6.0 innings in 19 of his 27 starts and allowed three or fewer runs in all but seven of his 27 outings...Colorado was 12-15 when he took the mound...picked off five baserunners, tied for second in the NL...at the plate, he hit .125 with a double, triple and four RBI...got off to the best start of his career, going 3-0 with a 2.49 ERA in the month of April...it was his most wins and lowest ERA over a full month as a major leaguer...among the NL leaders in April, Joe tied for third in wins, was sixth in ERA and tied for 10th in average against (.219)...Colorado's No. 3 starter out of spring training, he made his NL debut on April 8 at Bank One...in his second start on April 14 at Coors, he defeated the Diamondbacks 14-4 for his first victory since May 13, 2003 at Toronto, snapping a nine-game losing streak covering 24 appearances and 14 starts...it was the first of three consecutive winning starts...after a no decision May 1 vs. Atlanta, he won his fourth consecutive decision with a 2-0 combined shutout over Montreal on May 5 at Olympic Stadium...the four-game winning streak matched his personal best set August 19-October 5, 2001...took a no hitter into the sixth inning on May 20 at Cincinnati before Jason LaRue led off the frame with a single to right, the first of three straight hits in what was a three-run sixth-inning for the Reds in a 3-1 loss...exited after only 3.0 innings due to tightness in his left shoulder on June 4 against San Francisco...worked 7.0 scoreless innings on June 20 vs. Baltimore and left with a 2-0 lead but ended up with a no decision in a 4-2 loss...was pulled just prior to his July 7th start at San Francisco due to a left shoulder inflammation and was placed on the 15-day DL that same day (retro to July 3)...made three rehab appearances at Triple-A Colorado Springs before rejoining the Rockies on August 10...went 4-3 with a 3.19 ERA in his final 10 outings after returning from the DL...was ejected in the fourth inning of his August 15th start at PNC Park after Jason Kendall charged the mound following a hit-by-pitch....was suspended for five games and fined an undisclosed amount...he appealed the suspension and later served it September 19-24...notched his career-high ninth victory September 18 vs. Los Angeles, limiting the Dodgers to just four hits and one run over 7.0 innings and a season-high 120 pitches...did issue a career high six walks.
2003
Was Tampa Bay's Opening Day starter and made 22 consecutive starts before finishing the season with 10 relief appearances...went 3-12 with a 6.13 ERA and one save in his third major league season...his 12 losses led the staff...posted a 2.40 ERA in his 10 relief outings and was 3-11 with a 6.60 ERA in his 22 starts...became Tampa Bay's fifth different Opening Day starter in six years and the youngest O.D. starter in team history at 23 years, 10 months...took the mound opposite Pedro Martinez in the opener, a no decision in a 6-4 D'Rays win (7.0 ip, 4 r, 1 er)...tossed the first complete game one-hitter in Rays history with a 2-0 victory on May 2 at Detroit...allowed a base hit to the first batter faced (Andres Torres), then retired 25 of his next 28...it was his second career shutout and sixth complete game...followed the one-hitter with the worst start of his career, May 7 vs. Minnesota, as he allowed 13 hits and 10 runs over 4.0 innings in an 11-6 loss...was 3-3 through his first nine starts but he wouldn't win another game after May 13...lost his last nine decisions which was one shy of the club record (10, Albie Lopez in 2001)...exited after one inning on May 31 vs. Anaheim due to a left shoulder inflammation...placed on the 15-day disabled list June 1 and missed more than a month before being activated July 9...at the time of his injury, was leading the AL in hits and earned runs allowed...headed to the pen following his August 29th start at Oakland and made his first career relief appearance September 2 vs. Seattle after 72 consecutive starts...picked up his first career save by working the final 3.0 innings in an 11-6 win over Toronto on September 9.
2002
In his first full season at the major league level, he tied for the staff lead in victories (8) and finished with a club-record five complete games, tying Mark Buehrle for second most in the AL behind Paul Byrd (7)...hurled 196.2 innings, third highest total in club history...allowed three earned runs or less in 18 of his 30 assignments...went 2-2 with a 3.55 ERA and three complete games in four starts against the NL and 6-9 with a 4.73 ERA in 26 starts vs. the AL...tied for the AL lead with eight pickoffs (Buehrle)...led the club with 16 hit-batters, second most in the AL behind Chan Ho Park (17)...committed 10 errors, most by a major league pitcher since the Yankees' Melido Perez had that many in 1992...fanned a career-high and staff season-most 10 on May 9 vs. New York but lost 3-1 to El Duque...it was the first time in 327 games a Tampa Bay pitcher struck out that many in a game...tossed his first career complete game and shutout, 1-0 on May 21 at Seattle...it was the Rays' first complete game since Albie Lopez on April 13, 2001 at Baltimore, ending a major league record 195 consecutive games without a complete game...set a club record for most innings in one month with 47.1 in June (also tops in the AL)...served a seven-game suspension from July 12-18 for allegedly throwing at Toronto's Ken Huckaby June 6 at SkyDome.
2001
Named the Rays' Most Outstanding Rookie by the Tampa Bay chapter of the Baseball Writers Association of America...finished third among AL rookies in ERA (4.44), tied for fourth in starts (20) and fifth in strikeouts (78)...his 12 quality starts were second to only C.C. Sabathia among AL rookies...picked off four base runners, tied for 10th in the AL...was promoted from Triple-A Durham on June 2 and made his Major League debut with a 6-2 victory on June 6 at Toronto (5.0 ip, 5 h, 2 er, 4 bb, 5 so)....at 22 years, one month, he became the youngest Ray ever to win a game...lost seven straight starts, July 8-August 14, matching the second longest losing streak in the AL...ended the season with a four game win streak over his last seven starts...posted a 2.88 ERA in September, tops among AL rookies...worked 7.0 shutout innings in a 1-0 victory on September 23 at Toronto...in six starts vs. Roger Clemens, Andy Pettitte, Eric Milton, Mark Mulder and Tim Hudson, he was 2-1 with a 3.38 ERA (40.0 ip, 15 er)...named Devil Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Year, going a combined 6-0 with a 0.99 ERA in 11 starts at Double-A Orlando and Durham...tabbed as the Best Pitching Prospect in the Southern League after posting a 0.19 ERA in seven starts before his promotion to Triple-A.
2000
Spent his first full professional season at Single-A Charleston, where he ranked third in the organization in wins (11) and strikeouts (142) and fourth in ERA (3.30)...his two shutouts tied for tops in the South Atlantic League and his three complete games tied for fourth...named Rays Minor League Pitcher of the Month for July, going 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA...struck out an organization-best 17 batters July 20 at Columbia in a 16-0 Charleston victory, third-highest strikeout total in minor league baseball at year's end.
1999
Was a New York-Penn League McNamara Division All- Star at Hudson Valley, leading the league in strikeouts (101), innings pitched (95.0) and games started (16)...his 2.65 ERA ranked second in the Rays' system and fifth in the NY-Penn League...named organizational Pitcher of the Month for August, going 2-2 with a 1.98 ERA. 1998-made his pro debut at Princeton (Rookie) and tied for the team lead in wins (6) and starts (13).
