In his second season in the Majors in 2023, Melendez ranked second on the Royals with 148 games, including 10 games (seven starts) at catcher, one game at first base, 58 games (55 starts) in left field and 72 games (68 starts) in right field…as a rookie in 2022, he made 65 of his 124 starts (52.4%) at catcher...In 84 games before the All-Star break, he hit .206 (63-for-306) with a .622 OPS…in 64 games after the break, he hit .273 (62-for-227) with an .836 OPS...Of his 16 HR in 2023, 10 came at Kauffman Stadium, where he’s hit 21 of his 34 career HR (61.8%)...Tied for 3rd in the American League with 11 outfield assists, trailing only Teoscar Hernández (12) and Alex Verdugo (12), and was responsible for 30% of Kansas City’s American League-leading 37 outfield assists.

Melendez appeared in 129 games (124 starts) with the Royals in his 2022 debut season, including starts at catcher (65), left field (22), right field (15) and DH (22)... Only eight other first-year players in American League history have matched his combination of HR (18) and walks (66) in a single season, most recently done by Eric Hinske in 2002…Melendez is the only first-year player to hit those marks while playing at least 50% of his games at catcher. ..
