Ogando back on DL one start after earlier stint

TORONTO -- The Rangers placed right-hander Alexi Ogando on the 15-day disabled list Sunday with right shoulder inflammation, and called up Josh Lindblom from Triple-A Round Rock to take his spot on the 25-man roster.

It marks the second time Ogando has gone on the DL this season, making only one start between stints. Ogando, who missed three weeks in May with right biceps tendinitis, first felt the discomfort in his shoulder at the beginning of Texas' three-game set in Toronto, though he pitched Wednesday in Boston.

Rangers manager Ron Washington stressed that the 29-year-old is not experiencing pain in the area, but there is concern that Ogando has made two DL stints in such a short period of time.

Texas believes Ogando will not need long, though.

"First thing is first -- we want to evaluate what is going on with him," assistant general manager Thad Levine said.

When Levine and Washington were asked by reporters if they believe Ogando, who has switched between relieving and starting over the past couple years, is better suited to throw out of the bullpen, both said that determination will not be made until Ogando's rehab progresses.

"We just have to wait and see what's the deal," Washington said. "That's certainly not a decision or opinion I'm going to form right now. To make a decision like that, I'm not ready to do that today."

But Levine said those questions were raised internally long before Ogando's latest setback.

"I think that has been an ongoing debate in the organization really since Alexi came to the big leagues," Levine said. "He has been a major contributor for us, quite frankly, in both roles. But right now, we view him as one of our five starting pitchers."

Ogando allowed one run over 5 2/3 innings with six strikeouts in his start against the Red Sox. In 10 starts this season, Ogando is 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA over 55 1/3 innings.

Lindblom will take Ogando's spot in the rotation for Monday's series opener against Cleveland if he doesn't pitch in relief during Sunday's finale against the Blue Jays, Washington said.
