Mondesi hits IL with partial shoulder dislocation

SS injured shoulder diving for popup Tuesday; Arteaga recalled from Omaha

KANSAS CITY -- Royals shortstop Adalberto Mondesi, who has been enjoying a breakthrough season with a Major League-leading nine triples and 31 stolen bases, was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a left shoulder subluxation.

The Royals recalled shortstop Humberto Arteaga from Triple-A Omaha to take Mondesi’s place on the roster.

Mondesi suffered the injury Tuesday night while diving to catch a foul ball. He had an MRI early Wednesday morning, and the exam revealed a partial dislocation of the shoulder.

Standing in front of his locker before Wednesday’s game against the White Sox, Mondesi said he was still in pain, but hinted that the injury could have been worse.

“Yeah, they talked to me that a lot of things could have happened,” Mondesi said. “But I don’t have an answer yet [about a rehab program].”

Mondesi said that when he dove headfirst to catch the foul ball, he felt his shoulder pop as he hit the ground, and he felt the partial dislocation.

“But it went back in where it’s supposed to be,” Mondesi said. “Right now, I’ll be on rehab and hopefully, it will get better soon.”

Royals manager Ned Yost said Mondesi will get treatment and do some rehab, and then will be re-evaluated in seven days.

Both Yost and Mondesi indicated there is no timetable for Mondesi’s return.

Asked if he would try to make a diving play like he did Tuesday again, Mondesi said, “Yeah, but I would catch it next time.”
