PHOENIX -- Jose Pujols hit the first home run of his illustrious career at Chase Field, which was then called Bank One Ballpark, in 2001.
When the Angels first baseman returned there for Wednesday's 5-1 loss to the D-backs, he showed that he still has the touch in the field.
Pujols made a diving stop on Steven Souza Jr.'s line-hugging ground ball and threw from his back after landing in foul territory to retire Souza for the first out of the sixth inning.
"That's a fabulous play," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "That's incredible. That's the way Albert plays. He does everything 100 percent."
Pujols remained down for a moment and was attended to by trainers before getting back on his feet and staying in the game.
"I think he just fell on his knee a little bit," Scioscia said. "He's not going to come out of a game."
With no designated hitter in the National League ballpark, Pujols started both games of the two-game series at first base.
Pujols' first career homer came off D-backs right-hander Armando Reynoso here on April 6, 2001.
