Angels' retired numbers, club Hall of Fame

January 14th, 2021

ANAHEIM -- Beyond the right-field fence at Angel Stadium the club displays its six retired numbers, while the organization also created its own Angels Hall of Fame in 1988.

But what is the criteria to receive both honors? It’s a question a committee of Angels executives and former players ponder when they meet each year to discuss the club Hall of Fame and retired numbers.

The organization has been incredibly conservative with retired numbers, only retiring those who left an indelible mark on the franchise. Those six numbers are No. 11 for Jim Fregosi, No. 29 for Rod Carew, No. 30 for Nolan Ryan, No. 42 for Jackie Robinson, No. 50 for longtime coach Jimmie Reese and No. 26 for former owner Gene Autry, who is commemorated as the 26th man on the roster.

It’s a small group, and notably the Angels haven’t retired any numbers since 1998, making it a rare occurrence. But the Angels have a few candidates who could see their numbers retired in the future, including No. 15 for Tim Salmon, No. 14 for longtime manager Mike Scioscia and No. 27 for current superstar Mike Trout. Vladimir Guerrero also wore No. 27 with the club and is the lone player in the Hall of Fame to be inducted as an Angel.

No player has worn No. 15 since Salmon retired in 2006, nor has anyone worn No. 14 since Scioscia and the Angels parted ways after 19 years in 2018. Salmon is considered more likely to have his number retired before Scioscia, as he joined the organization more than a decade earlier and still has a strong relationship with the franchise. Garret Anderson, who owns several club records like Salmon, has seen five players wear his No. 16 since he retired, making it less likely his number is retired. But it is worth noting that 13 players wore Fregosi’s No. 11 before it was retired in ’98, so it’s not out of the question.

As for the Angels Hall of Fame, it’s a bigger and more inclusive group. It includes 15 individuals as well as the entire 2002 World Series winning team, which remains the only World Series title in franchise history. Fregosi, Carew, Ryan, Reese and Autry are the five members of the Angels Hall of Fame who also have their uniform numbers retired.

The other 10 members of the Hall of Fame with their year of induction are Guerrero (2017), Anderson (2016), Salmon (2015), Mike Witt (2015), Dean Chance (2015), Bobby Knoop (2013), Chuck Finley (2009), Brian Downing (2009), Don Baylor (1990) and Bobby Grich (1988).

Scioscia also is a prime candidate for induction into the club’s Hall of Fame, as he undoubtedly had more success than any Angels manager, guiding them to a club record 1,650 wins, seven playoff appearances and the 2002 World Series title.

There are others with worthy cases for the Angels Hall of Fame such as Darin Erstad, Troy Percival and Francisco Rodriguez, but it’s up to the committee to decide. As of now, there are no announced plans for any new inductions into the Angels Hall of Fame in 2021. But the committee will continue to meet going forward, and there’s likely to be some additions to the Hall of Fame and perhaps a uniform number retired in the near future.
