Angels' top 10 moments of the 2019 season

November 11th, 2019

ANAHEIM -- It was a difficult year for the Angels, who lost 90 games for the first time since 1999, but there were still several positive moments throughout the season

Here’s a look at the Top 10 moments of the 2019 season for the Angels:

1. Angels throw combined no-hitter
July 12 vs. Mariners

In one of the most memorable games in recent years, Angels right-handers Taylor Cole and Félix Peña combined to throw a no-hitter in the Angels’ first home game since the sudden death of Tyler Skaggs. Every Angels player wore Skaggs’ No. 45 and then placed their jerseys on the mound once the no-hitter was complete. Skaggs’ mother, Debbie, started it off with a perfect strike on the ceremonial first pitch to set the tone. The Angels won, 13-0.

2. Mike Trout sets Angels record for homers in a month
July 31 vs. Tigers

Trout capped off an impressive month of July with a solo homer off Nick Ramirez, giving him a club-record 13 blasts in July. Trout hit .286/.392/.821 with 29 RBIs in 22 games that month. He provided the Angels' only run in a 9-1 loss.

3. Trout robs homer with leaping catch
April 8 vs. Brewers

It was one Most Valuable Player candidate robbing another, as Trout nabbed a homer from the Brewers’ Christian Yelich at Angel Stadium. Yelich could only tip his cap to Trout after the play. Both players expressed their admiration for each other after the Angels' 5-2 win.

4. Angels hit back-to-back-to-back homers in bottom 4th
June 8 vs. Mariners

Tommy La Stella started it off with a solo shot off Yusei Kikuchi before Trout and Shohei Ohtani followed with solo blasts in the Angels' 12-3 win. It was the first time that Ohtani had faced his fellow countryman in Kikuchi, and he didn’t disappoint.

5. Jared Walsh walk-off single
May 25 vs. Rangers

Walsh’s first career RBI was a big one, as it was a walk-off single to beat the Rangers. It was also the first walk-off win of the year for the Angels. Walsh hit a blooper to left, but shortstop Elvis Andrus couldn’t reel it in, giving the Angels the 3-2 win.

6. Dustin Garneau ground-rule double to win
June 5 vs. Athletics

Garneau helped the Angels win with a walk-off double to left field to end the longest nine-inning game in Angel Stadium history. Garneau's game-winner left the bat at 96 mph at a launch angle of 42 degrees, giving it an expected batting average of .030 according to Statcast, but it got the job done and ended the game, 10-9, after four hours and 13 minutes.

7. Trout's grand slam
April 6 vs. Rangers

Trout was on fire against the Rangers in early April, and he unloaded on a grand slam off lefty Drew Smyly in a 5-1 win at Angel Stadium. In the four-game series against Texas, Trout hit five homers and had nine RBIs.

8. Justin Bour grand slam
April 23 vs. Yankees

Bour showed off his power with a grand slam off Yankees reliever Chad Green to help the Angels get back into the game. The four RBIs tied a season-high for Bour. The Angels fell to the Yankees, 7-5.

9. La Stella's grand slam
May 23 vs. Twins

La Stella was an All-Star for the first time in his career in 2019, and he smacked a grand slam off Minnesota’s Austin Adams in the ninth inning of the Angels' 16-7 defeat. La Stella had four RBIs in three different games.

10. Another slam for Trout
June 19 vs. Blue Jays

Trout had an incredible day at the plate in Toronto, as he crushed a grand slam off right-hander Aaron Sanchez and had a career-high seven RBIs in the game. It was the first seven-RBI performance by an Angels player since Torii Hunter in 2010. It also helped the Angels climb back above .500 with an 11-6 win.
