TEMPE, Ariz. -- This was not the final Cactus League tune-up Angels left-hander Tyler Skaggs desired.
Skaggs allowed four runs on four hits and five walks in three-plus innings while striking out four in a 15-9 loss to a D-backs split squad Saturday.

"Today is definitely not the outing you want at the end of Spring Training," Skaggs said. "But at the same time, it's a building block. It means I have a lot to work on in the bullpen.
"But other than that, I bounced back from 95 pitches [in his previous outing]. I threw some good fastballs, some good curveballs when I needed to. I worked on the changeup really well. I definitely need to clean up the walks first and foremost."

He threw 64 pitches.
"I've got to get ahead," Skaggs said. "Every time I was ahead, I got them out. Every time I was behind, they either got a hit or a walk. I've just got to move on going forward. I thought there were some at-bats today where I was focused and some counts today where I let the count get the best of me."
He departs Spring Training with an 0-1 record and a 9.00 ERA, with eight walks and 13 strikeouts in 11 innings.
"He had a tough outing," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "For a tune-up outing it was a little disappointing, obviously. Five walks and he just had a tough time getting the ball where he wanted it to be. Hopefully he'll pick up the pieces and throw the ball the way he can."
Camp battles
Rule 5 selection Luke Bard replaced Skaggs and allowed two inherited runners to score. In 1 2/3 innings, Bard surrendered four runs of his own on three hits and two walks while striking out three. His ERA ballooned to 8.25. Jefry Marte, who is trying to win a roster spot, went 0-for-1 with two walks and a sacrifice fly. He is hitting .344 with a .956 OPS.

By the numbers
Angels pitchers walked nine and struck out 13 Saturday. ... The Saturday crowd of 8,515 pushed the Spring Training total to 106,412 at Tempe Diablo Stadium this year. This is the seventh straight year to surpass the 100,000 mark and the 13th time in 15 years. .. Rene Rivera hit his third home run of the spring in the sixth inning.

The Angels and Dodgers will open the three-game Freeway Series on Sunday with the first game in Anaheim. Dodgers right-hander Kenta Maeda and Angels right-hander Parker Bridwell will pitch the first game. The Angels will start Matthew Shoemaker on Monday and JC Ramirez on Tuesday, with those games at Dodger Stadium.
