SAN FRANCISCO -- The Rockies found themselves without the services of Hunter Goodman for each of the first two games of this weekend's series at Oracle Park.
On Friday, manager Warren Schaeffer said his All-Star catcher was given the day off in the series opener due to left shoulder inflammation dating back to a swing in Wednesday’s victory in Arizona.
Goodman subsequently missed the Rockies' 5-2 win over the Giants, with Brett Sullivan manning the position in his absence. Goodman was back in the lineup the Rockies announced Saturday morning, until a late scratch roughly two hours before first pitch due to the same shoulder issue.
“He's doing good,” Schaeffer said pregame Friday. “It's going to be day to day. He's gotten treatment a couple times, different times today. Left shoulder. Happened on a swing down there in Arizona, I think in his last at-bat. He texted me yesterday, his shoulder was bothering him. He was talking to the trainers, so it just makes sense to give him a day off today and see if it gets better tomorrow.”
This shoulder issue has sidelined one of the Rockies' key performers in 2026. This season has seen the 26-year-old Goodman emerge as a significant presence in Colorado's lineup, mashing 34 home runs -- fifth most among all players in the Majors entering play Saturday.
Goodman leads Colorado in OPS (.861), RBIs (69) and runs (69) and is third in hits (104) behind TJ Rumfield and Jake McCarthy.
In 111 games, he’s split duty at catcher (78 games) and designated hitter (33), the Rockies being mindful to get him off his feet behind the plate whenever possible.
Colorado entered this weekend in San Francisco with a 3-3 record through stops in St. Louis and Arizona on its longest road trip of the season -- and fresh off the Rockies’ first series win over the D-backs in Phoenix since 2022.
