Mike Trout wins 2022 Silver Slugger Award

Nine career Silver Slugger Awards set new record for A.L. outfielders

November 11th, 2022

ANAHEIM – Mike Trout today was named the recipient of a 2022 Louisville Slugger Silver Slugger Award, which is given to the best offensive players at each position in both the American and National Leagues.  The award, which has been presented annually since 1980, is Trout’s ninth and the 27th overall for the Angels.

With today’s announcement, Trout becomes the first player to win the award nine times by their age-30 season and passes Manny Ramirez for the most Silver Slugger Awards by an American League outfielder (Ramirez won eight as an outfielder and one at DH). Trout is the sixth player all-time to win at least nine career Silver Sluggers, joining Barry Bonds (12), Mike Piazza (10), Alex Rodriguez (10), Barry Larkin (9) and Ramirez (9). Additionally, Trout ties Ramirez for second-most A.L. Silver Slugger Awards, trailing only Rodriguez.

Trout also extends his Angels record with nine career Silver Sluggers. He broke Vladimir Guerrero’s previous franchise record of four (2004-07) after capturing his fifth award in 2016.

The New Jersey native will receive his Silver Slugger Award in an on-field ceremony during the 2023 season. He ranked second in the A.L. with 40 home runs and tied for third with 70 extra-base hits, while finishing the year with 28 doubles, 80 RBI and a .999 OPS in 119 games for the Angels. He earned his 10th career All-Star selection, set a franchise record with home runs in seven consecutive games (Sept. 4-12) and became the Angels all-time leader in career runs scored.

The Angels have now won a Silver Slugger Award in 11 consecutive seasons, which is the longest streak in franchise history. The Halos 27 overall Silver Sluggers include 20 by outfielders, three by third basemen, and one each at catcher, second base, shortstop and designated hitter.

In addition to Trout, the Angels had three other finalists for 2022 Silver Slugger Awards:  Shohei Ohtani (DH & UTL), Luis Rengifo (UTL) and Taylor Ward (OF).

The Silver Slugger Award winners were determined by a vote of MLB managers and coaches who select the players they felt were the best offensive producers at each position in their league in 2022. Selections were based on a combination of offensive statistics, as well as the general impressions of a player’s overall offensive value.  Managers and coaches were not allowed to vote for players on their own teams.
