After the night of his life, Game 1 hero was back on his teammate's couch

TORONTO -- Addison Barger woke up on Davis Schneider’s pull-out couch again this morning.

After Barger launched the first pinch-hit grand slam in World Series history on Friday night, Schneider shared that his longtime teammate and friend had crashed with him the night before.

“He was staying with Myles [Straw], then he stayed with me last night,” Schneider said after the Game 1 win. “My girlfriend is here and he was like, ‘Can I sleep in the bed with you guys?’ So I was like, ‘No, sleep on my couch.’ It’s a pull-out. It was squeaking all night. It was so funny to look over and see him sleeping there in the middle of the night. He’s a head case, but he’s funny.”

The three of them were asleep in the hotel room overlooking the field at Rogers Centre the night before Game 1 when they heard something strange coming from the window. Down on the field, Pharrell Williams and the Voices of Fire choir were rehearsing for their performance prior to the World Series opener, which included the national anthems. There were performers all over the field, dancing and swaying and swinging, as Schneider rubbed his eyes and Barger sat up on the pull-out couch.

It originally sounded like this bunking arrangement would all be a one-night thing before Barger got his own room, but baseball players are superstitious. So Barger was right back on the couch again Friday night after the game.

“I thought he was going to have his own place, but he was like, ‘Can I sleep with you again?’” Schneider said. “So I said, ‘Sure. Might as well.’”

This had to be a tough sell to Schneider’s girlfriend, though, right? Did she really want Barger on the couch again?

“She’s cool with it. Plus, it’s Barger. He doesn’t really talk that much anyways,” Schneider said.

He snored a bit, but Schneider didn’t mind. He can snore all he wants if he keeps coming up with moments like that for the Blue Jays.

After Game 2 on Saturday, the Blue Jays will board their charter flight for the west coast and go through a workout day on Sunday in LA. Schneider is hoping that the Blue Jays only need to come back to Toronto for a World Series parade, not Games 6 and 7, but he made one thing clear prior to the road trip.

“He’s not staying with me in L.A.,” Schneider said. “The Blue Jays pay for our hotel rooms, so he’s not staying with me.”
