Jacoby suspended 14 games, will appeal
Blue Jays hitting coach reportedly got into heated exchange with umpire crew Wednesday
TORONTO -- Blue Jays hitting coach Brook Jacoby has received a 14-game suspension from Major League Baseball for his "postgame conduct toward the umpire crew" assigned to Wednesday's game against the Red Sox at Fenway Park.
The suspension was announced by MLB chief baseball officer Joe Torre prior to Monday night's game against the Yankees. Toronto later issued a news release stating that the suspension will be appealed and the club would not have any comment on the matter until a hearing is held.
Jacoby reportedly got into a heated exchange with the umpiring crew following a 4-1 loss to the Red Sox. Hall of Fame writer Peter Gammons reported late last week that members of the Blue Jays coaching staff began yelling at the umpires after the game.
Umpires and the visiting team use the same tunnel after games at Fenway Park. It wasn't immediately clear what happened during the encounter between Jacoby and Bill Miller's umpiring crew, and more details are expected to be revealed either at the hearing or shortly before.
The suspension was set to begin Monday night but the Blue Jays have appealed the decision, which means Jacoby was in uniform for the series opener against New York.
