TORONTO -- Following a busy 48 hours on the free-agent market, the Blue Jays are continuing their momentum by pursuing veteran outfielder Michael Brantley.

Despite earlier reports that the two sides had come to an agreement, a source told MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that a deal was not in place. But the Blue Jays remain involved in discussions with Brantley, as they work to add further to their lineup following the reported addition of star outfielder George Springer on a six-year, $150 million deal.

The club has not confirmed the negotiations.

Brantley is the exact type of bat that the Toronto lineup needs, and there is plenty of familiarity between him and the Blue Jays' front office from his time with Cleveland. Now 33, Brantley is an ideal fit for this Blue Jays lineup as a tough at-bat who can consistently put the ball in play with a very low strikeout rate. Over his past two seasons with the Astros, Brantley hit .309 with an .867 OPS. Known as more of a doubles hitter than a power bat, Brantley does still have some pop, hitting 22 home runs in 2019.

Along with Springer, Brantley will help add an on-base component that this young Blue Jays lineup has been searching for. Empty at-bats hurt the club at times in 2019 and '20, but they now enter the season with a significantly more complete offensive profile.

This also creates a good problem for the Blue Jays after adding both Springer and Brantley to an already talented outfield that features Lourdes Gurriel Jr., Randal Grichuk and 2020 breakout star Teoscar Hernández. Brantley is likely to see some time at designated hitter, but not exclusively, which points to the Blue Jays using their outfield depth in the pursuit of other upgrades. As it stands today, the club’s primary areas of need are third base and the starting rotation, with the latter being their likeliest play.

Prior to agreeing to their reported deal with Springer, the Blue Jays also agreed to terms with right-handers Tyler Chatwood and Kirby Yates, which are expected to be made official soon.
