Travis day to day with bruised left rib; X-rays negative

TORONTO -- The Blue Jays appear to have narrowly avoided another major injury after second baseman Devon Travis was diagnosed with a bruised left rib.

Travis was forced to depart Sunday's 5-2 loss to the Braves in the first inning after he was struck by a pitch from right-hander Shelby Miller. He was later sent for X-rays, which confirmed the injury was a bruise and not a fracture.

The report will come as very positive news for an organization that is already playing without starting shortstop Jose Reyes because of a cracked rib. Travis is considered day to day, and with an off-day scheduled for Monday it's possible he'll be in the lineup on Tuesday night against the Orioles.

"There's no crack in his rib, which is a great thing," Blue Jays manager John Gibbons said. "We'll see with a day off, he's a tough kid. We think with a day or two of rest he should be fine."

Travis has been one of Toronto's best hitters through the first two weeks of the season. The 24-year-old rookie is hitting .356 with three homers and 12 RBIs in 13 games this season. He began the year hitting in the final spot of the batting order, but he was promoted to the leadoff position when Reyes went down with his injury.

Steve Tolleson entered the game as a pinch-runner and replaced Travis at second base. Tolleson likely would become the favorite to start at second base if Travis requires some additional time off.

Reyes is still hopeful to make his return on Tuesday, but the Blue Jays will wait for another couple of days before making that final determination. The expectation is that Reyes will hit right-handed. because it's hitting from the left side that causes him the most issues.

"I think the plan is, Tuesday should be good to go," Gibbons said. "He's feeling a little better. He's probably going to hit right-handed, see how that goes, maybe buy him some time that way."
