Carroll (low back discomfort) out of lineup for 2nd straight night

KANSAS CITY -- Diamondbacks outfielder was out of the lineup for the second straight game Wednesday against the Royals at Kauffman Stadium with low back discomfort.

Carroll had originally been penciled into the lineup on Tuesday night, but was scratched before the game.

Manager Torey Lovullo said after Tuesday's game that Carroll will have a medical evaluation once the club returns home and that it would be unlikely to see Carroll on Wednesday.

"He will need some imaging once we get back to Phoenix," Lovullo said. "Just to make sure everything is OK."

Tim Tawa, originally slotted at first base, started in right field for Carroll, with Ildemaro Vargas at first base as the D-backs defeated the Royals 5-3 in 11 innings.

Carroll was not in the starting lineup for Monday's 5-4 win after Lovullo said he wanted to give Carroll a full day off. However, Carroll entered the game late as the Diamondbacks pulled out a victory in 10 innings.

Carroll is hitting .240 with 19 homers and 61 RBIs. He leads the Major Leagues in triples with 16 and his 65 extra-base hits rank fifth in the Majors.
