Perdomo named D-backs' 4th All-Star -- just as Mom predicted

Shortstop added to NL squad to replace Cubs' Swanson

July 8th, 2023

The D-backs will have a fourth representative at next week’s All-Star Game as shortstop was added to the team Friday as a replacement for injured Cubs shortstop Dansby Swanson.

Perdomo joins Arizona teammates outfielder Corbin Carroll, who was elected to start the game by fans, outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. and right-hander Zac Gallen on the NL team.

Perdomo had gotten off to a great start to the season with five home runs, 33 RBIs and a .274/.381/.416 slash line in 72 games.

The shortstop said he was surprised when he got the news he had been added to the team, but said that his mother, Fatima, had a dream recently that Perdomo would be playing against the best players in the game.

“My mom called me two days ago, she had a dream that I was in the All-Star Game,” Perdomo said on Friday. “She didn’t know how to explain it to me because she doesn’t know anything about baseball, but she saw me with my teammates and a lot of other players and a lot of media. I imagined [the All-Star Game] when she told me and I told her maybe next year, maybe two years.”

Perdomo has come a long way from his 2022 season in which he slashed just .195/.285/.262.

“We talked about it as recent as yesterday about how frustrated he was by his year last year and he was going to never let that happen again,” D-backs manager Torey Lovullo said. “Offensively, he made improvements and now he's an All-Star. It's a special moment for him and for all of us.”
