Hanley jams right shoulder, to have MRI on Monday

CHICAGO -- Dodgers shortstop Hanley Ramirez said he doesn't believe he will go on the disabled list after jamming his right shoulder while catching a foul popup and tumbling into the Wrigley Field stands in the seventh inning of Sunday's 1-0 win against the Cubs.

"I don't think so," he said when asked about the disabled list. "I don't think negative stuff, I don't think the DL."

Ramirez, his right arm in a sling, will have an MRI on Monday in St. Louis. But he said he didn't feel anything pop when he landed on his elbow, driving his arm into the shoulder. Symptoms are not consistent with a dislocation.

"It's really sore now," said Ramirez. "We'll see how I feel tomorrow."

Ramirez chased down a wind-blown popup by David DeJesus near the Cubs' bullpen mound in foul territory. He took a couple steps before hitting the low brick retaining wall, draped over it and landed on his right elbow.

Third-base umpire Greg Gibson checked to see that Ramirez had held onto the ball, signaled out, then summoned trainers to attend to Ramirez. After a few minutes, he came off the field, clutching his right shoulder with his left hand.

"I was just really mad the way we're playing now, everybody is happy and we can't afford to have somebody gone," Ramirez said. "That's what I'm thinking about -- the team, not myself."

Ramirez has already had two stints on the disabled list this year -- missing 24 games healing from surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament suffered in the World Baseball Classic and another 28 games with a left hamstring strain.

When healthy, however, he has been the key to the offense. He came into the game batting .365 with 11 homers and 37 RBIs in 53 games.

"Obviously, anything with him is serious with what he's been able to do for us," said manager Don Mattingly. "Injuries are going to happen, you just hope it's nothing long-term. I'm hoping not [putting him on the DL]. I'd just be guessing until he gets the MRI."

Ramirez has a history of problems with the left shoulder, which underwent surgery in 2011.

Ramirez injured his right (throwing) shoulder on a play at the plate in the Dominican Republic over the winter, but he was only serving as a designated hitter.

"Let's see how it feels tomorrow with a ball in the hand," he said.

Nick Punto replaced Ramirez at shortstop Sunday. If Ramirez is placed on the DL, the likely replacement is Dee Gordon, who is hitting .307 at Triple-A Albuquerque.
