Grandal takes foul off mask; X-rays negative

Dodgers catcher to undergo further tests after being forced to exit game

WASHINGTON -- In the sixth inning of Sunday's 5-0 win against the Nationals, Dodgers catcher Yasmani Grandal exited the game after taking a hard foul ball off his mask. X-rays on his jaw were negative, manager Don Mattingly said, but Grandal will undergo further tests on Monday.

There was no concern of a concussion to Mattingly's knowledge.

"When it first happened, [the training staff and my teammates] didn't know what I was saying because I couldn't really move my jaw too much," Grandal said. "It's gotten a little better now. It's definitely hard to swallow, hard to bite down, so I'll probably be on a liquid diet for a couple of days."

With the Dodgers leading, 1-0, Nationals center fielder Michael Taylor fouled a Zack Greinke offering off the lower portion of the catcher's mask, and Grandal immediately called for a trainer before discarding his mask and glove. Video replay showed Grandal pointing to his chin and plugging his ears with his fingers during talks with the trainer and Mattingly.

"When he left the game, I thought he broke his jaw," Mattingly said. "He couldn't even talk out on the field. They are going to do a CAT scan tomorrow, or some kind of scan, to make sure nothing minor is in there. He's feeling pretty good right now."

After a brief conversation, A.J. Ellis replaced Grandal behind the plate.

"I spent the rest of the game with probably 70 percent focus on the game and 30 percent concerned about how he was," Ellis said.
