Cleveland Baseball History

Recognizing Our History

“Indians” will always be a part of our history, but the most important part of our team name is “Cleveland.”

The last century of Cleveland baseball saw many historic milestones –1948 World Series, Bob Feller’s OpeningDay no-hitter, Len Barker’s perfect game, the 22-game winning streak, and countless playoff runs, comebacks, and celebrations. These remarkable accomplishments do not diminish with a new name and will forever stay in our record books and memories.

The decision to move away from our current team name helps renew and elevate our team’s legacy and commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

We are proud to be the first team in the American League to have had an African American player in Larry Doby, and African American manager in Frank Robinson.

Fans have long celebrated these acts of diversity, equity, and inclusion and take pride in our organization’s commitment to doing the right thing.
