Miami Marlins Educational Initiatives

As a member of the Dade and Broward Education community, you give students the tools they need to succeed. Your dedication changes lives and we are grateful for you.

We also want to help. The Miami Marlins are committed to making a continued positive impact in education. We would love for baseball to become part of your curriculum, to engage your students and assist with their desire to learn. Our brand new educational initiatives are a perfect way to spark interest, raise money for your school and help students to actively participate in their school & community.

Breaking Barriers Essay Contest

"Breaking Barriers: In Sports, In Life" is a baseball-themed character education program developed by Major League Baseball and Scholastic Inc., which uses America's Pastime, baseball, as the metaphor for life.

The Breaking Barriers essay contest asks students in grades four through nine to submit an essay about barriers or obstacles they have faced or are still facing in their lives, and how they overcame those obstacles using the values demonstrated by Jackie Robinson: citizenship, commitment, courage, determination, excellence, integrity, justice, persistence and teamwork. The contest will recognize ten national winners, which will include two Grand Prize winners and eight MVP Prize winners split between two separate grade groups (Grades 4-6 & Grades 7-9). All ten prize winners will receive a laptop computer, Breaking Barriers t-shirts and books for their class written by Sharon Robinson.

Summer Slugger

Each summer, students lose critical math and literacy skills, which can widen the achievement gap among students. To prevent this "summer slide," EVERFI has partnered with Major League Baseball to develop a continuous and engaging learning experience that prepares students of all backgrounds to enter the next school year on track. The 18-week program, targeted to 4th and 5th graders, unlocks activities at regular intervals and offers rewards for progress and consistency along the way. Students can engage with content that reinforces critical math and language skills while enjoying the freedom and motivation of a baseball-themed, game-based learning experience.

S.T.E.A.M Day Hosted by NBC 6

The Miami Marlins, in partnership with the Dade and Broward County School Boards and NBC 6, invite students in grades three through eight to Marlins Park to be part of our annual S.T.E.A.M. Day field trip at the ballpark.

This educational program explores how various S.T.E.A.M. principles relate to the game of baseball and Marlins Park. Participating schools receive 2 tickets per student to a future game. For the first time ever, chaperones are complimentary (1 chaperone per 10 students).

For larger groups, we have additional benefits, such as singing the National Anthem or performing on our Showtime Stage! The Marlins will provide promotional materials such as customized flyers for your group to print and distribute, as well as posters, to help promote your special group outing.
