Alex Guerrero of the Los Angeles Dodgers named National League Rookie of the Month

Alex Guerrero of the Los Angeles Dodgers has been named the National League Rookie of the Month for April.

Guerrero led qualifying NL rookies with a .423 batting average (11-for-26) and a 1.077 slugging percentage last month, and ranked first among NL rookies and tied for seventh overall in home runs (5) and RBI (13). Guerrero made his second Opening Day roster with the Dodgers this spring after spending most of the 2014 season with Triple-A Albuquerque. The 28-year-old went 3-for-5 with four RBI in his first start of the season on April 12th, batting seventh and patrolling the hot corner for the Dodgers in a 7-4 win at Arizona. Guerrero finished the day just a triple shy of the cycle and clubbed his first career Major League home run in the victory. As a pinch hitter, Guerrero went 3-for-7 with a double, two homers and five RBI during the month of April, becoming the first Dodger with multiple pinch-hit homers in a single season since Marcus Thames (2011). The Cuban-born slugger is currently tied for the Major League lead in pinch hits (4), pinch-hit homers (2) and pinch-hit RBI (5) this season. This is his first National League Rookie of the Month Award. He becomes the first Dodgers rookie to win the honor since teammate Yasiel Puig (June 2013).

Other rookies receiving votes included Guerrero's Dodger teammates Joc Pederson (.298, 13 R, 17 H, 5 2B, 4 HR, 10 RBI, .596 SLG) and Yimi Garcia (2-0, 0.77 ERA, 19 SO, 11.2 IP); Cincinnati's Anthony DeSclafani (2-1, 1.04 ERA, 21 SO, 26.0 IP); Philadelphia's Odubel Herrera (.301, 9 R, 25 H, 6 2B, 8 RBI); Arizona's Archie Bradley (2-0, 1.80 ERA, 14 SO, 20.0 IP); and Kris Bryant (.318, 7 R, 14 H, 10 RBI, .455 OBP) of the Chicago Cubs.

The National League Rookie of the Month for April, Alex Guerrero, will receive a specially designed trophy, suitably engraved, to commemorate his performance.
