Chris Davis of the Baltimore Orioles named American League Player of the Week

Baltimore Orioles first baseman Chris Davis has been named American League Player of the Week for the period ending June 2nd, his second such honor this season. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In seven games last week, Davis paced the Majors with a .481 (13-for-27) batting average while leading the American League in hits, total bases (26), slugging percentage (.963) and runs scored (10). His four homers tied Seattle's Jason Bay for the most in the A.L. and his .500 on-base percentage was tied for second. Davis added six RBI to his weekly totals, giving him 52 on the season. The six-year veteran led the Orioles to a 5-2 record for the week as they took over second place in the closely-contested A.L. East. Davis went 2-for-4 with two runs scored in a 6-2 victory over the Washington Nationals at Nationals Park on Monday. It was the first of five multi-hit efforts the 27-year-old had last week. In Wednesday's matchup between the two Clubs, Davis collected his second four-hit game of the season and notched his first multi-homer game of the year (fourth career), slugging the way to a 9-6 Orioles victory in the first game of a two-game series at Camden Yards. His second blast of the day, a two-run shot to deep rightcenter, capped a six-run seventh inning in which the Orioles overcame a 6-3 deficit. Davis continued to swing a hot bat in Friday's series-opener against Detroit, collecting two hits, including a timely ninth-inning single off Detroit Tigers closer Jose Valverde. Davis would come around to score on Chris Dickerson's walk-off home run as the Orioles took a 7-5 decision for their third straight win. Yesterday, the Texas native led off the seventh inning with a solo home run, marking his Major League-leading 20th home run of the season. The clutch homer sparked a three-run rally for the Orioles en route to a 4-2 victory in the rubber match of a three-game set against the Tigers at Camden Yards. This is Davis' third career weekly award, having won previously for the weeks of April 7, 2013 and September 30, 2012. He was also voted A.L. Player of the Month for April this season.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Davis' Orioles teammate Jim Johnson (0-0, 3 SV, 0.00 ERA, 3 SO, 3.0 IP); Adrian Beltre (.476, HR, 5 RBI, .714 SLG) of the Texas Rangers; Minnesota's Ryan Doumit (.300, 3 HR, 11 RBI, 5 R, .733 SLG) and Brian Dozier (.379, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 7 R, 11 H, .438 OBP); Toronto's Edwin Encarnacion (.333, 3 HR, 9 RBI, 6 R, .636 SLG) and Colby Rasmus (.375, 2 HR, 7 RBI, 12 H, .625 SLG); Oakland's Bartolo Colon (1-0, 0.00 ERA, CG, SHO, 3 SO) and Jarrod Parker (2-0, 1.35 ERA, 11 SO, 13.1 IP); and Seattle's Aaron Harang (1-0, 0.60 ERA, 12 SO, 15.0 IP).
