Discipline issued to D-backs, Dodgers

Major League Baseball has issued the following discipline as a result of the on-field incidents that occurred in Tuesday night's game between the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Joe Garagiola, Jr., Senior Vice President of Standards & On-Field Operations for Major League Baseball, made the announcement. A combined eight uniformed members of the two Clubs have received suspensions:

• D-backs pitcher Ian Kennedy has received a 10-game suspension for intentionally throwing a pitch in the head area of Zack Greinke of the Dodgers in the bottom of the seventh inning, after a warning had already been issued to both Clubs earlier in the game;
• D-backs infielder Eric Hinske has received a five-game suspension for leaving the dugout and for his aggressive actions during the incidents;
• Pitcher J.P. Howell and infielder/outfielder Skip Schumaker of the Dodgers have each received two-game suspensions for their aggressive actions during the incidents;
• Dodgers hitting coach Mark McGwire has received a two-game suspension for his conduct during the incidents; 
• Dodgers pitcher Ronald Belisario has received a one-game suspension for his aggressive actions during the incidents;
• Dodgers manager Don Mattingly has received a one-game suspension for the actions of his Club and for his conduct during the incident;
• D-backs manager Kirk Gibson has received a one-game suspension for the intentional actions of Kennedy after a warning had been issued.

The players, managers and coach named above have received undisclosed fines in addition to their suspensions. Fines also were issued to Greinke, Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig, D-backs catcher Miguel Montero and D-backs outfielder Gerardo Parra. 

All player discipline is subject to appeal. If a player elects to file an appeal, then the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the process is complete. Mattingly and Gibson are scheduled to serve their suspensions tonight, when the Dodgers are to begin a series with the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park and the D-backs are to begin a series with the San Diego Padres at PETCO Park. McGwire is scheduled to serve his suspension tonight and Saturday.

The Dodgers have received a fine for allowing players who are currently on the disabled list to leave the dugout and enter the field during the incidents, violating MLB rules. In addition, neither Club will be allowed to have players who are on the DL sit in its dugout in their games throughout the weekend. Players who are on the DL may return to their benches on Monday for the D-backs and on Tuesday for the Dodgers.
