Kyle Seager of the Seattle Mariners named American League Player of the Week

Seattle Mariners infielder Kyle Seager has been named American League Player of the Week for the week ending June 29, 2014. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

In six games last week, Seager paced the Majors with 14 hits and a .958 slugging percentage while leading the A.L. with eight RBI. The left-handed-hitting slugger had the second-highest batting average among qualifying A.L. hitters last week, posting a .583 mark (14-for-24). He also ranked second in on-base percentage (.583) and total bases (23). Seager collected hits in every game last week, helping the Mariners to a 4-2 record on the week. He clubbed a pair of homers with three doubles and five runs scored while posting five multi-hit games during the week.

The 26-year-old tied a career high by posting four consecutive multi-hit games from June 23rd-27th. Seager went 3-for3 with a pair of RBI as the M's clubbed their way to a 12-3 win over the visiting Boston Red Sox on Monday. The North Carolina native followed with a four-RBI performance in Seattle's 8-2 victory over the defending World Series Champions on Tuesday. In Thursday's series finale, Seager clubbed his team-leading 12th home run of the season in a 5-4 loss to the Sox. His bat helped the Mariners add to the win column on Friday as he went 3-for-4 with a double and an RBI in the opening game of a three-game set with the Cleveland Indians at Safeco Field. Seager's first-inning RBI-single gave the M's an early 1-0 lead in an eventual 3-2 victory over the Indians. In Saturday's 5-0 loss, Seager collected Seattle's lone hit of the game off Indians starter Josh Tomlin. In Sunday's rubber-match between the two Clubs, Seager helped the Mariners to a 3-0 victory with a two-hit performance. This is his second career weekly award, having been named co-A.L. Player of the Week (with Chicago's Jose Abreu) earlier this season for the week of April 21st-27th.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Seager's teammate Felix Hernandez (2-0, 1.20 ERA, 15 SO, 15.0 IP); Abreu (.357, 10 H, 2 2B, 4 HR, 7 RBI, .857 SLG, .400 OBP) of the White Sox; Houston's Jose Altuve (.481, 13 H, 10 SB); Adrian Beltre (.600, 12 H, HR, 7 RBI, .850 SLG, .625 OBP) of the Texas Rangers; and Toronto's Jose Reyes (.364, 7 R, 12 H, 3 2B, 4 RBI).
