42: Ricky Mast

I have always and will always be unequivocally dedicated to the Atlanta Braves. Part of this dedication includes never wearing another team’s emblem. The mere thought of another team’s logo on any article of my clothing is enough to make me cringe. But on April 15, that all changes. And with good reason.

On this day, my fellow Cave Dwellers and I celebrate Jackie Robinson Day by wearing his number 42 on our backs. I am simply thrilled to wear Jackie’s jersey on this day because of everything that he represented.

Jackie Robinson was everything that a man should strive to be. Yes, he was a man of principle who stood up for what he believed in, but the way in which he did it is something that was unprecedented in the history of man. The sheer hatred and adversity that Jackie endured is virtually unfathomable to me.

Standing strong for what you believe in is a tall task when you can fight back. When you are required to not fight back in the face of near constant disrespect, well, that’s just simply something that only the most exceptional souls are equipped to handle. Jackie Robinson was the epitome of the word “exceptional” both on and off the field. And you know what? This Brave is honored to don Dodger blue and number 42.
