Turturro outlasts competition in Postseason Survivor

Actor bests 23 other celebrities to win $10,000 for Catholic Charities

A contingent of stars from stage, screen and field signed on to be part of MLB.com's Postseason Survivor Competition, but they didn't find it quite as easy as one might think.

Beginning with 24 aspirants, the Postseason Survivor field has already been whittled down to one: Actor Nick Turturro, whose victory earned him $10,000 toward Catholic Charities, the group he was playing for.

Starting on Thursday, when the National League Division Series began, the celebrity competitors each made one pick per day. If they chose correctly, they survived, moving on to the next day. But a wrong pick resulted in elimination.

Celebrities such as stand-up comedian George Lopez and future Hall of Famer Chipper Jones were eliminated Friday as part of a large group that went with Zack Greinke and the Dodgers, who lost to the Braves. (That should teach Chipper to go against his former team!) Dean Norris, famous for playing Hank Schrader on Breaking Bad, also lost with the Dodgers, as did actress Melissa Joan Hart, known for her work on Clarissa Explains It All.

In addition to Jones, former big leaguers Frank Thomas, Jack Morris, Mark McLemore and Jeff Nelson competed in the challenge. The Big Hurt and Morris missed on Friday, while McLemore and Nelson fell out by picking the Tigers on Saturday.

Those two were part of a six-member group that was still in the running when Saturday began, along with Turturro, actor Joe Lo Truglio, MLB.com's Jim Duquette and country star Jason Aldean. Lo Truglio cast his lot with the Rays, while Duquette and Aldean both chose the Tigers. Turturro went with the A's.

When the Red Sox bested David Price and Tampa Bay on Saturday afternoon, and Oakland followed with a dramatic walk-off win, that sealed it for Turturro, a veteran of TV shows such as NYPD Blue and Blue Bloods.
