Ranked as MLB.com's No. 1 left-handed prospect in the minors entering the 2014 season, the 6'2", 190-pound hurler began the campaign with Double-A Jacksonville and was promoted to Triple-A New Orleans in May. Heaney also participated in the Arizona Fall League, going 2-1 with a 1.95 ERA (27.2 IP - 6 ER) in seven starts for Glendale. The southpaw entered 2014 as the Marlins' top prospect by Baseball America.

In Heaney's junior season at Oklahoma State in 2012, he pitched to an 8-2 record and a 1.60 ERA (118.1 IP - 21 ER) leading all NCAA pitchers with 140 strikeouts. Heaney was named Big 12 Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Year and as a first team All-American by several publications, including Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball.

Heaney graduated from Putnam City High School in Warr Acres, Oklahoma. He was selected by the Tampa Bay Rays in the 24th round of the 2009 Draft, but did not sign, opting to enroll at Oklahoma State University.
