Angels Acquire LHP Joe Thatcher and OF Tony Campana from Diamondbacks

Club sends OF Zach Borenstein and RHP Joey Krehbiel to Arizona

ANAHEIM, CA - The Angels today acquired LHP Joe Thatcher and OF Tony Campana from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for OF Zach Borenstein and RHP Joey Krehbiel. Today's announcement was made by General Manager Jerry Dipoto.

Thatcher, 32, has appeared in 37 games this season out of the Arizona bullpen, pitching to a 1-0 record and 2.63 ERA (24 IP - 7 ER) with 25 strikeouts and three walks. His 8.33 strikeout-to-walk ratio this season ranks second in the National League behind Clayton Kershaw (9.73). He has an active streak of 23 consecutive appearances without walking a batter (13.1 IP - 53 batters faced) which is the longest active streak in the Majors and is a new Diamondbacks franchise record. Since 2007, he ranks third in the Majors in inherited runners scored percentage, having stranded 242 of 300 inherited runners (80.67%).

A native of Indianapolis, IN, Thatcher was originally signed as a Minor League free agent by the Milwaukee Brewers in 2005. He was traded to San Diego on July 25, 2007 and made his big league debut with the Padres the following day. He appeared in 287 games with San Diego from 2007-2013, posting an 8-11 record with one save and a 3.18 ERA (198.1 IP - 70 ER) before being traded to Arizona on July 31, 2013. In 59 career games with the D-backs, has gone 1-1 with a 3.78 ERA (33.1 IP - 14 ER). He has held left-handed batters to a .221 batting average against (92/417) for his career. Overall, owns a 9-12 lifetime big league record and a 3.26 ERA (231.2 IP - 84 ER) with 242 strikeouts and 78 walks.

Campana, 28, has split the 2014 season playing for the Diamondbacks and Triple-A Reno. In 46 games with the Aces this season, the outfielder is batting .288 (47/163) with 17 RBI and 31 runs scored. The Kettering, OH native has made two stints at the Major League level this year, going 9-for-60 (.150) with a double, triple and three RBI in 26 games. A former 13th round draft pick by the Chicago Cubs in 2008, Campana reached the Majors with the Cubs in 2011. He enjoyed his finest season in 2012 when he hit .264 in 89 games with 26 runs scored and 30 stolen bases. Since his debut in 2011, Campana's 89.2 stolen base percentage (66 SB/8 CS) is tops in the Majors (min. 70 steal attempts), just edging out Angel outfielder Mike Trout (88.9%).

Borenstein, 23, has hit a combined .262 (79/301) with seven home runs and 50 RBI this season between Double-A Arkansas and Triple-A Salt Lake. The outfielder opened the year with Arkansas where he hit .268 (48/179), including five home runs and 28 RBI before his promotion to Triple-A on May 25th. Borenstein posted a .256 clip (30/117) with two home runs and 22 RBI in 30 games with the Bees but was transferred back to Arkansas on July 2nd. The Arlington Heights, IL native was originally drafted by the Angels in the 23rd round of the 2011 amateur draft.

Krehbiel, 21, has pitched this season for both Single-A Burlington and Single-A Inland Empire, fashioning a combined 2.00 ERA (18.0 IP - 4 ER) with five saves and 23 strikeouts. A former 12th round pick by the Halos in 2011, Krehbiel owns an 8-7 record with a 3.85 ERA (121.2 IP - 52 ER) in 92 games at the minor league level.

Thatcher is expected to be uniform for this evening's game while Campana has been selected to the 40-man roster and optioned to Triple-A Salt Lake. Below is a glance at the career Major League statistics for both players:
