Angels claim Cunningham from Braves

ANAHEIM -- In desperate need of outfield depth, the Angels claimed Todd Cunningham off waivers from the Braves on Friday. Cunningham is out of options, but the Angels can keep him in the organization by slipping him through waivers, like they did with Roger Kieschnick and Alfredo Marte early last offseason.

Cunningham, 26, is a switch-hitting slap hitter with good speed and the ability to play all three outfield positions. An Alabama product who was originally a second-round Draft pick in 2010, Cunningham appeared in 39 games with the Braves this past season and batted .261/.325/.337 for Triple-A Gwinnett, adding two home runs and nine stolen bases.

Cunningham, who represents Billy Eppler's first acquisition as the Angels' general manager, has batted .276/.346/.367 in his six-year Minor League career with 20 homers and 94 stolen bases. He played center field in 482 of his 609 games.

The Angels still need a starting left fielder and could use at least one more outfielder for their Triple-A affiliate. They began the offseason with Daniel Robertson as the only natural fit for the Salt Lake Bees, assuming Collin Cowgill returns as the team's fourth outfielder.

To create room for Cunningham on the 40-man roster, journeyman left-hander Jo-Jo Reyes -- the winning pitcher in Saturday's epic comeback against the Rangers -- was designated for assignment.
