Angels select eight players on Day 2 of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft
The Angels selected eight players, three with Southern California ties, during rounds 3-10 today of the 2015 First-Year Player Draft, as announced by Angels' Director of Scouting Ric Wilson. The draft will conclude tomorrow (June 10) with rounds 11-40.
With their third round pick (104th overall), the Angels selected RHP Grayson Long from Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. Standing at 6'5" and weighing 215 pounds, he went 9-0 in the regular season with a 2.62 ERA and was a two-time SEC pitcher of the week. The right-hander struck out 100 batters in his 12 starts for the Aggies.
Long was previously drafted in the 39th round by the Seattle Mariners in 2012, following his high school career at Barbers Hill High School in Houston, TX. He was awarded first team All-District and went on to have three consistently successful years for the Aggies. His freshman year (2013) he posted a 4-2 record with a 3.52 ERA and he continued to improve into his sophomore year (2014) capturing a 6-2 record with a 3.12 ERA, with 51 strikeouts in 89.1 innings pitched.
The Halos' fourth round pick (135th overall) was RF Brendon Sanger, from Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, FL. Sanger, 21, as a junior was awarded Conference USA's Player of the Year honors. He batted .360 with seven home runs and 48 RBI contributing to the Owls conference's leading record of 19-10. The outfielder's past two years for the Owls saw him post a .347 batting average his freshman year (2013) and a .332 average his sophomore year (2014). This season he had a league leading .494 on-base percentage and 44 RBI.
With their fifth round pick, the Angels selected RF Jared Foster, a senior from Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, LA. Foster, 22, is currently playing in the College World Series for the Tigers, but to date holds a .284 batting average with nine HR and 34 RBI in 201 at-bats. Foster began his SEC career batting .218 his freshman season and went on to improve that average his sophomore year (2013) to .359 contributing 12 RBI.
The sixth round featured a hometown player, SS David Fletcher, a draft-eligible sophomore from Loyola Marymount University, in Los Angeles, CA. The native from Cypress, Calif. batted .308 this season, tallying 51 RBI and 69 runs to the Lions in 111 games played. He was awarded first team All-WCC (West Coast Conference) for the second straight year.
The Angels selected another hometown prospect, 2B Hutton Moyer, from Pepperdine University in Malibu with their seventh pick. Moyer, 22, is the son of 25-year Major League veteran Jamie Moyer. Hutton's older brother, Dillon, is a shortstop in the Los Angeles Dodgers farm system. Halos' chose another position player with their eighth round selection, CF Kyle Survance, from the University of Houston (TX).
The Angels selection in the ninth round was C Tanner Lubach, a senior from the University of Nebraska. To round out the second day of the draft, the Halos chose RHP Adam Hofacket, from Cal Baptist University with their 10th selection.
