Angels add outfielder Ortega on 1-year deal

The Angels signed outfielder Rafael Ortega to a one-year, Major League contract on Tuesday, providing them with additional outfield depth and a potential left-handed-hitting option off the bench.

Ortega, 24, played in only two Major League games back in 2012 and has spent most of his time in center field throughout his Minor League career, though he also has experience in both corners. Signed by the Rockies out of Venezuela in 2008, Ortega is a career .288/.355/.399 hitter in the Minor Leagues, with 35 homers, 305 RBIs and 192 stolen bases in 703 games.

Ortega spent last season with the Cardinals' Triple-A affiliate and batted .286/.367/.378 with a couple of homers and 17 steals, while leading the Pacific Coast League with 15 outfield assists. With the Angels, he can compete with Efren Navarro and Todd Cunningham.

Ortega has one option left and is still in his pre-arbitration years, so he'll make something close to the Major League minimum in 2016. The 2015 minimum was $507,500.
