Lowrie recognized for his work off the field
A's shortstop to receive Dave Stewart Community Service Award
OAKLAND -- Shortstop Jed Lowrie has been named the recipient of the 2014 Dave Stewart Community Service Award, given annually to an A's player for charitable contributions in the Bay Area and nationwide.
Stewart, who pitched for the A's from 1986-92 and again in '95, will present Lowrie with the award before Wednesday's 12:35 p.m PT. game against the Angels at O.co Coliseum.
Lowrie and his wife, Milessa, founded the Jedi Warriors program in 2012 while Lowrie was with the Astros. About once each homestand, the Lowries host military veterans and their families at A's games with help from the Wounded Warrior Project. They buy tickets and food for the families and distribute Jedi Warriors shirts designed by Lowrie.
The Stewart Award was created in 1996 in honor of Stewart's community service in the Bay Area. Two current A's won it before Lowrie: closer Sean Doolittle in 2013 and outfielder Jonny Gomes in 2012.
Lowrie was also recently named the A's nominee for the esteemed Roberto Clemente Award.
