Astros sign first round pick outfielder Derek Fisher

HOUSTON, TX - The Houston Astros announced today the signing of outfielder Derek Fisher, who was selected in the Competitive Balance Round A with the 37th overall pick in the 2014 MLB First Year Player Draft. Terms of the contract were not disclosed. The official announcement was made by Astros Director of Amateur Scouting Mike Elias.

As a junior at the University of Virginia this season, Fisher (6-3, 207) helped lead the Cavaliers to the NCAA College World Series Finals as their everyday left fielder and No. 5 hitter. The 20-year-old hit .281 (169x601) with 30 doubles, 12 triples, 17 homers, 127 RBI, 17 steals and an .825 OPS (.369 OBP/.456 SLG) during his three seasons at Virginia. Fisher was a 2013 Second Team Preseason All-American, and was named a 2012 Freshman All-American by Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA. Last summer in the Cape Cod League, Fisher was an All-Star after hitting .333 (40x120) with 13 steals, 25 walks and 19 strikeouts in 36 games for the Harwich Mariners. The left-handed hitter was ranked by MLB.com as the No. 26 overall prospect in the 2014 draft class.

"Derek brings to our organization a hard-to-find blend of major college track record and physical upside," said Elias. "He's a big, strong kid with a good swing, outstanding bat speed, and a plus running tool. His accomplishments at Virginia and on the Cape Cod League speak to his hitting ability, and we think his power-speed combo will continue to blossom in the pro game. He's a potential middle of the order left-handed bat."

The Astros have now signed 36 of their 41 selections from the 2014 MLB Draft.
