Bartolo Colón of the New York Mets named National League Player of the Week

Bartolo Colón of the New York Mets has been named National League Player of the Week for the week of August 31st-September 6th. The announcement was made earlier today on MLB Network.

The veteran right-hander posted a 2-0 record in two starts last week with a 0.00 ERA (0 ER/17.0 IP). He led the Majors in innings pitched and was tied for first in wins and ERA last week, while his 11 strikeouts were tied for sixth-most among NL hurlers. On Sunday, the 42-year-old tossed 9.0 shutout innings in a 7-0 win at Miami. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, Colón became the oldest pitcher in club history to record a complete-game shutout, joining Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan (6), Charlie Hough (2), Jamie Moyer (2) and Dennis Martinez as the only pitchers aged 42-or-older to do so since 1989. The 9.0 scoreless frames extended Colón's scoreless innings streak to 25.0, which is the longest such streak by a pitcher of his age or older since Hall of Famer Hoyt Wilhelm, then 44, threw 25.1 scoreless frames in 1967 (Elias). On Monday, August 31st, Colón tossed 8.0 shutout innings while fanning nine Phillies and issuing just a single walk in a 4-0 victory at Citi Field. Colón currently sports a 13-11 record on the season in his second campaign as a Met and 18th in the Major Leagues. This is his fourth career Player of the Week honor, and his first in 12 years since he last won for the week of September 8-14, 2003, while a member of the Chicago White Sox.

Other noteworthy performances last week included Colorado's Nolan Arenado (.441, 9 R, 15 H, 6 HR, 12 RBI, 1.029, .457 OBP); Washington's Bryce Harper (.529, 11 R, 3 HR, 6 RBI, 12 BB, 1.235 SLG, .700 OBP) and Ryan Zimmerman (.500, 8 R, 13 H, 4 HR, 14 RBI, 1.115 SLG, .481 OBP); and San Francisco's Buster Posey (.481, 3 R, 13 H, HR, .667 SLG, .548 OBP).

In recognition of his National League Player of the Week Award, Bartolo Colón will be awarded a watch courtesy of Game Time, the leader in licensed sports watches, available at MLB.com.
