BBWAA Philadelphia Chapter announces 2014 Phillies award winners

Former Phillies broadcaster Chris Wheeler won the inaugural Charlie Manuel Award for Service and Passion to Baseball and Cole Hamels became a four-time winner of the Steve Carlton Award for Most Valuable Pitcher in voting by the Philadelphia chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America for the annual Phillies franchise awards.

Marlon Byrd won the Mike Schmidt Award for Most Valuable Player and Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins were the other winners announced today. Rollins won the Dallas Green Award for Special Achievement. Howard won the Tug McGraw Award for True Professionalism.

Wheeler was a Phillies broadcaster for 37 years on radio and television before moving into a new role with the team this season. The Philly BBWAA added the Manuel Award this year to recognize the winningest manager in franchise history.

Byrd received 46 percent of votes for the Schmidt Award. He entered the final week of the season leading the team with a career-high 25 homers and was second to Howard in RBIs at 83. Hamels finished second in voting. Jonathan Papelbon, Ben Revere and Chase Utley also received votes.

Hamels edged Papelbon by three votes to win the Carlton Award. He was 9-7 with a career-best 2.47 ERA going into his final two starts.

Rollins was nearly a unanimous winner for the Special Achievement Award, which he earned for becoming the franchise's all-time hits leader. Rollins previously won the Green Award in 2012.

Howard received 77 percent of votes for the True Pro Award given to the player who best exemplifies McGraw's good-natured personality and for his professional cooperation with beat writers. Revere and A.J. Burnett also received votes.

The awards were instituted by the BBWAA Philadelphia chapter in 2004. They will be presented on the field before Friday night's game against the Atlanta Braves.
