BTS leaders' run ends at 46, one shy of '13 high
Posey's 0-for-4 afternoon ends couple's streak 11 picks short of big prize
Thijs and Evelyn Storms woke up Thursday as the current Beat the Streak leaders with 46 straight successful selections, 11 away from the game's $5.6 million grand prize.
Their remarkable run came to a close before evening's end, though, the result of an 0-for-4 performance from the Giants' Buster Posey.
The Stormses' impressive streak fell one correct pick shy of the season's overall lead, which is held by Braves fan William Bryan, a 30-year-old police officer, husband and father.
As it stands, Bryan is in line to win the $10,000 consolation prize set aside for the Streaker who ends the year atop the BTS standings.
Thursday's result notwithstanding, the Stormses had good reason to pick Posey, a catcher who entered the day with a .303 average on the year.
Their choice was also supported by Thursday's batter-pitcher splits, which showed Posey with a lifetime .500 average (4-for-8) against the Mets' Jon Niese, who pitched pretty well in the matinee.
Although the Stormses fell short of the game's jackpot -- the biggest of its kind in fantasy sports history -- they should be lauded for compiling one of the longest streaks in the history of BTS play.
In Beat the Streak, participants try to establish a virtual "hitting streak" by picking one or two big leaguers per day, with their streaks continuing as long as their selections collect at least one hit. In 13-plus seasons of BTS play, no one has matched Joe DiMaggio's magic number of 56, set in 1941. To win the $5.6 million prize, one must top Joe D.'s run by one.
