Braves call up infielders Castro, Garcia

ST. LOUIS -- To fill the roster holes left by Friday night's trade of Juan Uribe and Kelly Johnson to the Mets in exchange for a pair of Minor League pitchers, the Braves recalled Daniel Castro and Adonis Garcia from Triple-A Gwinnett on Saturday.

Garcia, a 30-year-old utility player, earned his first Major League start at third base in Saturday's 1-0 loss to the Cardinals. He went for 1-for-3, with his single in the second inning his first career hit.

It's the second big league stint of the year for both Garcia and Castro, though neither was given extended opportunities in their Major League debuts.

Garcia, who is hitting .284 for Gwinnett this year, earned his first Major League at-bat on May 19. He drew a walk in one plate appearance on May 20 before he was optioned.

"I feel that I've been good with runners in scoring position, and the chance to play every day has made me a consistent hitter," Garcia said through a translator.

Castro, a 22-year-old infielder, singled in his only Major League at-bat on June 17 and is hitting .264 in 227 at-bats for Gwinnett this year. He singled in his first and only Major League at-bat on June 17.

"I'm happy. I wasn't expecting this," Castro said through a translator. "I'm going through a tough time right now in Gwinnett. I had a tough stretch, but I'm happy here and that they had the confidence in me to bring me up."

Garcia signed a Minor League contract with the Braves in April after spending three years in the Yankees' organization. The Braves signed Castro as an amateur free agent in 2009.
