Braves unsuccessful on fourth-inning challenge
One pitch later, Freeman delivers RBI hit against Padres' Despaigne
ATLANTA -- Freddie Freeman was denied an RBI in the bottom of the fourth when his drive down the left-field line was ruled foul by third-base umpire Larry Vanover. However, he lined the next pitch into center field for a run-scoring single.
Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez unsuccessfully challenged the foul call, which stood after a review lasting one minute and 45 seconds. But Freeman's 57th RBI made up for the lost challenge as Atlanta took a 5-2 lead over San Diego on Saturday night.
With B.J. Upton on first and Tommy La Stella on third in what was already a three-run inning for the Braves, Freeman hit a flare to left off Padres starter Odrisamer Despaigne that fell near the outer edge of the chalk line in the outfield grass.
However close it may have been, Atlanta failed to earn an overturn on a challenge for the first time since June 4. The Braves have won 12 of 17 challenges this season.
