Brewers outright three righties off 40-man roster

The Brewers cleared more space on a tight 40-man roster Wednesday by outrighting pitchers Santo Manzanillo, Josh Ravin and Jesus Sanchez to Triple-A Nashville.

With the removal of those three right-handers, all three of whom cleared waivers, 35 players remain on the roster. That number will grow in the coming weeks when Ryan Braun is back from his 65-game suspension, Rickie Weeks is reinstated from the 60-day disabled list and the Brewers add eligible prospects, including first baseman Hunter Morris -- Milwaukee's No. 7-ranked prospect -- to protect them from the Rule 5 Draft.

Manzanillo shot up the prospect lists after posting a 1.75 ERA in 48 relief appearances in 2011, but he injured his shoulder in a serious auto accident in the Dominican Republic that fall and has not been the same since. He was limited to 18 games in 2012 with a 6.95 ERA, and went 1-8 with a 5.83 ERA in 46 games between Class A Advanced Brevard County and Double-A Huntsville in 2013. He will be 25 in December.

Sanchez, 26, posted a 2.83 ERA and seven saves in 48 relief appearances for Triple-A Nashville in 2013.

Ravin will be 26 in January and did not pitch in the Brewers organization this past season. He was claimed off waivers from the Reds on Sept. 19 after pitching to a 5.82 ERA in 48 games between Double-A Pensacola and Triple-A Louisville in 2013 -- his third straight season with an ERA above 5.00. The Brewers view him as a change-of-scenery candidate and have had success with more "advanced" pitchers in recent seasons -- John Axford and Jim Henderson.
