Crew loses challenge, setting up Cubs' two-run homer

MILWAUKEE -- The Brewers lost a challenge on a close play at second base during the fourth inning of Saturday's 8-0 loss to the Cubs at Miller Park, and the ruling cost them a run.

Cubs third baseman Emilio Bonifacio led off the fourth inning with a single for Chicago's first baserunner against Brewers starter Wily Peralta. Junior Lake followed with a potential double-play grounder to third base, but Bonifacio beat Mark Reynolds' throw, according to umpire Paul Emmel's call. The Brewers did manage to throw out Lake at first.

Brewers manager Ron Roenicke challenged, and Brewers fans reacted to the replay as if they believed the home team would win. Instead, the call stood. Bonifacio was ruled safe on the play, and Roenicke fell to 5-5 in challenges this season.

After seeing the replay on the video board, Roenicke said he was "very surprised" that the call stood, and it prompted him to ask the officiating crew whether they had any input into replay decisions.

"What I wanted to know -- and I asked [first-base umpire] Jerry Meals -- was, does it come from New York?" Roenicke said. "If the guys here are looking up on the board and see something, do they have an input? [They said] it comes from New York. I don't know what they saw different than what we saw."

Cubs first baseman Anthony Rizzo followed with a two-run home run to end the teams' scoreless tie.

"It was a big play," Roenicke said. "It puts Wily back in the windup with two outs, and it changes what happens out there."
