Injury report: Peralta throws from flat ground
Gomez eyes Saturday return to lineup; Davis facing 'best-case scenario'
MILWAUKEE -- Right-hander Wily Peralta began a throwing program this week and is among a trio of Brewers working back from varying degrees of injury.
Here's an update on Peralta, center fielder Carlos Gomez and left fielder Khris Davis:
• Peralta, who was placed on the disabled list May 25 with a strained left oblique, is in the early stages of his comeback. He threw on flat ground for the first time Thursday and reported no problems, but he remains weeks away from being activated.
"They've got it kind of mapped out and he'll progress every day hopefully," Brewers manager Craig Counsell said. "We're still a ways [away], being a starting pitcher, but as long as he's pain-free -- it's not an arm injury so we don't have to protect his arm -- he can ramp it up a little faster."
When Peralta was originally diagnosed, the timetable was estimated at 4-6 weeks. Asked for an updated projection on Friday, Counsell said, "It's not close enough to approximate yet."
• Gomez missed a third straight start Friday with pain in his right hip, an issue similar to the one that bothered him about a month ago. He hopes to be back in the lineup Saturday afternoon against the Nationals.

"I feel much better, and I think [Saturday] for sure I'll be playing," Gomez said. "The last couple weeks, I've played with a wrap around me, not completely 100 percent. … I can play through, but better we miss one or two days [instead of more]."
• As of Thursday, Davis was 10 days post-surgery for a torn meniscus in his right knee and already playing catch in the outfield at Miller Park. He's hopeful of landing on the short end of his 4-6 week projected absence. His next step will be swinging the bat, which Davis could do in the next few days.

"I think this was the best-case scenario," Davis said.
Said Counsell: "I know he's playing catch and everything, but for me, when you start hitting and running the bases, then we can start talking about when he's coming back. But everything has been positive."
