Call at first overturned on O's first challenge
As a result of the ruling, Jones scores on single by Cruz in sixth
BOSTON -- The Orioles were among the last teams in Major League Baseball to challenge a call, but it was worth the wait. After Nelson Cruz was originally called out at first in the sixth inning, the umpires overturned the call following a replay review, which meant Cruz had an RBI single and the game against the Red Sox was tied at 2. Baltimore lost the game, 4-2.
With two outs in the sixth, Cruz hit a ball deep into the hole at third base, and Brock Holt backhanded the ball before throwing across the diamond for a close play in which Cruz was initially ruled to be out at first base. Manager Buck Showalter came out and challenged the call, with the replay taking 49 seconds, and the umps ruled Cruz safe at first, with Adam Jones, who was at third, scoring on the play.
"We've had about 10 or 11 that [replay coordinator Adam Gladstone] has been right about, too," Showalter said. "Just because you didn't challenge doesn't mean he's been wrong. I asked Adam at the end, I go, 'How did that feel?' And he goes, 'Real good.' It's a process that worked out for us."
The Orioles and Cardinals entered the day as the only two clubs in Major League Baseball to not have a replay challenge this season. The overturned call also marked the 500th RBI of Cruz's career.
