Cards ink second-round pick, nine others
ST. PETERSBURG -- The Cardinals announced the signings of 10 more players from their 2014 First-Year Player Draft class, including second-round pick Ronnie Williams out of American Senior High School (Fla.).
Williams, an 18-year-old right-handed pitcher, will begin his professional career with the Cardinals' Gulf Coast League affiliate in Jupiter, Fla. A source confirmed with MLB.com that Williams received a signing bonus of $833,900, which is slot value for the No. 68 overall pick.
Two other players taken in the first 10 rounds -- shortstop Andrew Sohn (sixth) and Daniel Poncedeleon (ninth) -- also reached agreements with the Cardinals. Sohn, out of Western Michigan University, will join the short-season State College (Pa.) club, as will Poncedeleon, a four-time drafted player out of Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University.
Outfielder Blake Drake (18th), first baseman Casey Grayson (21st), catcher Cole Lankford (27th), right-hander Josh Wirsu (30th), third baseman Julian Barzilli (31st), right-hander Cody Schumacher (36th) and right-hander Davis Ward (40th) round out the rest of Wednesday's signees.
Schumacher will join Sohn and Poncedeleon at State College. Drake, Grayson, Lankford and Wirsu will report to Johnson City (Tenn.) to join that short-season club. Barzilli and Ward are headed to Jupiter.
The Cardinals have now signed 18 of their 42 Draft selections.
