Stats of the Day: Milestone hit for Beltran

Here are five interesting items from around the big leagues Tuesday …

• In the Yankees' 5-4 loss to the Indians, Carlos Beltran collected his 2,400th career hit, a game-tying solo home run in the eighth. All time among switch-hitters, Beltran ranks 14th in hits, fifth in home runs, fourth in extra-base hits, fifth in total bases, 11th in runs scored and fifth in RBIs.

• In the Red Sox's 5-4 loss to the Marlins, Xander Bogaerts went 2-for-4, and he is now hitting .313 for the year. Only five previous times has a Red Sox player been in his age-22 or younger season, qualified for the batting title and finished the year with a higher mark. Ted Williams did this three times, with a high of .406 in his age-22 season in 1941 (he hit .344 in '40 and .327 in '39). Tris Speaker hit .340 in 1910. In '39, Bobby Doerr finished his campaign with a .318 mark.

• Seattle's Nelson Cruz hit his American League-leading 34th home run, which also happened to be his AL-leading 140th hit. Dante Bichette is the most recent player to lead his league in hits and homers in the same year, posting 40 home runs as part of a 197-hit campaign in 1995. Cruz has hit safely in 21 straight games, tied with Troy Tulowitzki for the longest streak of the season.

• Madison Bumgarner fanned 12 with no walks in a five-hitter as San Francisco beat Houston, 3-1. It was the second time in his career Bumgarner had worked a complete game and finished with at least a dozen strikeouts and no walks. The only other Giants pitcher since 1914 to have multiple efforts like this were Ray Sadecki, who had one in 1967 and a second in '68. Bumgarner's first such effort came on Aug. 26, 2014.

• In the Giants' victory, Brandon Belt homered twice, both times against southpaw Scott Kazmir. Belt is the second left-handed hitter to homer twice in a game against Kazmir, joining Robinson Cano.

Milestone watch for Wednesday

• Mets teammates Michael Cuddyer and Juan Uribe are each on closing in on 1,500 career hits. Cuddyer has 1,499, while Uribe owns 1,498.

• Clayton Kershaw needs three strikeouts for 200 this season. It would be the sixth time in his career reaching the milestone, tying him with Walter Johnson, Sam McDowell and Bert Blyleven for the most through a pitcher's age-27 season.
