Renteria wins a challenge, loses one

SAN DIEGO -- Cubs manager Rick Renteria had a split on two replay challenges Friday night.

He won his first challenge in the bottom of the fourth after second-base umpire Gerry Davis ruled Cubs right fielder Nate Schierholtz had trapped Seth Smith's sinking line drive to right. The replay showed Schierholtz caught the ball for an out.

But Renteria's second challenge in the top of the fifth went against the Cubs.

Replay confirmed first-base umpire Phil Cuzzi's call that Padres starting pitcher Tim Stauffer tagged the bag at first ahead of Emilio Bonifacio on the center fielder's grounder to the right side. Stauffer caught a toss from first baseman Yonder Alonso as his foot hit the bag.

Renteria is 10-9 on replay challenges this season.
