Chicago Cubs set Opening Day roster
PITTSBURGH – The Chicago Cubs have set their Opening Day 25-man roster in advance of their 2013 season opener against the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.
The Cubs have selected the contracts of left-handed pitcher Hisanori Takahashi and infielders Alberto Gonzalez and Brent Lillibridge.
Outfielder Brett Jackson has been optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Right-handed pitcher Scott Baker has been placed on the 60-day disabled list as he continues to recover from Tommy John ligament replacement surgery. Right-handed pitcher Matt Garza (left lat strain), infielder Ian Stewart (left quad strain) and infielder Darwin Barney (left knee laceration) have been placed on the 15-day disabled list. Garza and Stewart are retroactive to March 22, while Barney is retroactive to March 31.
Right-handed pitcher Robert Whitenack has been designated for assignment.
The club’s 40-man roster now stands at 40 players.
