Mariners sign Wang to Minor League deal

SEATTLE -- Veteran right-hander Chien-Ming Wang, a 19-game winner for the Yankees in both 2006 and '07, signed a Minor League deal with the Mariners on Saturday and will report to Triple-A Tacoma.

Wang, 35, has been pitching most recently in the independent Atlantic League. He last appeared in the Majors in 2013, when he went 1-2 with a 7.67 ERA in six starts for the Blue Jays.

The native of Taiwan has a career 62-34 record and a 4.37 ERA in eight seasons in the Majors, including five with the Yankees from 2005-09, when he posted a 55-26 record and a 4.16 ERA. He finished second in the American League Cy Young Award voting in 2006, when he was 19-6 with a 3.63 ERA, and he followed that up by going 19-7 with a 3.70 ERA the next year.

Wang pitched for the Nationals in 2011-12 (6-6, 4.94 ERA in 21 games) and then was with the Blue Jays in 2013.

Wang spent 2014 in Triple-A with the White Sox and Reds, going a combined 13-8 with a 4.12 ERA in 28 starts. He opened this year with the Braves' Triple-A Gwinnett club and was released after going 2-6 with a 6.10 ERA in 11 outings (10 starts).

He has since posted a 3-0 mark and a 2.49 ERA in three starts for the Southern Maryland Stone Crabs in the independent Atlantic League.
