Reed nearly perfect for Class A Short Season Hillsboro

D-backs No. 17 prospect allows his first baserunner in the bottom of the 7th for Hops

D-backs prospect Cody Reed threw 6 2/3 perfect innings for Class A Hillsboro on Friday night, before giving up a two-out double in the seventh.

Nonetheless, Reed -- Arizona's No. 17 prospect -- finished the night having allowed just one hit and no runs over a career-high seven innings, while striking out seven in the Hops' 2-0 shutout win over Eugene.

"Coming into this game, my goal was to try to go more than six innings, go seven or eight innings and give my bullpen a little relief," Reed said to MiLB.com. "I was thinking about it the whole time. Glad I could do it."

The left-hander's quest for a perfect game ended in the seventh by Ian Happ, the Cubs' first-round pick in June's Draft. But Reed struck out the next hitter looking to escape any further trouble.

"I was a little disappointed," Reed told MiLB.com of losing the perfect game. "Kind of mad when it happened, but I gave it up to their best hitter, so that wasn't too awful."

Reed, a second-round pick in the 2013 Draft, lowered his ERA on the season to 1.31 as he picked up his fourth victory this year.

"That was my first seven-inning outing, and some of my outings have been good," Reed said to MiLB.com. "I've had a few more strikeouts in a couple of my outings, but those outings I didn't go perfect through 6 2/3. I guess some can come close, but I just try to get better every day."
