Broken water main near Coors postpones game

Teams will play doubleheader on Sunday

DENVER -- Saturday night's Rockies-Reds game was postponed because of a broken water main at 20th and Blake -- the intersection where Coors Field is located.

The Denver Office of Emergency Management requested the game be postponed at about 6:50 p.m., or about 40 minutes after the scheduled start time. The water main break at 20th and Blake cut off the water supply to the ballpark, meaning the restrooms and concession stands were "inoperable," the team said in a press release.

The game will be made up Sunday at 7:10 p.m. MT as part of a split doubleheader. The Rockies and Reds also will play at 2:10 p.m. MT. That game is expected to be a sellout because of jersey retirement ceremonies for Rockies longtime star Todd Helton, who played 17 seasons in a Rockies uniform before retiring at the end of last season.

In Sunday's first game, the Reds will start right-hander Mat Latos (4-3, 2.95 ERA) against Rockies right-hander Jordan Lyles (6-1, 3.70). The second game will pit Reds right-hander Dylan Axelrod in his 2014 debut against Rockies lefty Yohan Flande (0-5, 5.36).

The Rockies also have some lineup uncertainty. First baseman Justin Morneau suffered neck stiffness on Saturday and was scratched from the lineup.

The Rockies announced that separate tickets will be required for the games. Gates for the regularly scheduled game will open at noon, and gates will open at 6 p.m. for the night game. Only tickets printed with Aug. 17, 2014, 2:10 pm will be valid for the first game.

Tickets from the Saturday game are valid for the 7:10 pm game. Exchanges for Saturday night's game may be made for any game throughout the remainder of the season -- value for value, best available seating. Complimentary tickets have a value of zero dollars and therefore may not be exchanged. Discounted tickets may be exchanged only for the amount paid to the Rockies and are subject to any constraints applicable to the original sale.

There will be no cash refunds for Saturday's game.

Tickets purchased via StubHub need to be returned to StubHub for refund or exchange. StubHub tickets are not valid for exchange or refund at Coors Field or the Rockies Dugout Stores.

Ticket exchanges will be accepted at the Coors Field Ticket Office and all Rockies Dugout Stores.

The 12-inch water main was utilized by only Coors Field, according to Denver Water spokeswoman Stacy Chesney. Chesney was uncertain of the age of the pipe that failed but did add that no other businesses in downtown Denver lost water pressure.

The pipe will now have to be replaced before Sunday's doubleheader.

"It's not an ideal situation, but our folks will work as hard and as fast as they can to get it repaired," Chesney told the Denver Post.
